Recent updates from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have introduced additional tools to support the prevention and treatment of New World screwworm infestations, with important relevance for exotic wildlife.
On April 24, the FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization for F10 Antiseptic Barrier Ointment with Insecticide. The product is expected to be effective in preventing and treating NWS in captive wild, exotic, and zoo mammals, as well as wild and pet birds. It is also authorized for use in certain livestock species, including cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and deer. This product is not approved for use in domestic dogs and cats.

On April 27, the FDA issued a second EUA for Negasunt Powder, another topical treatment effective for use in captive wild, exotic, and zoo mammals. It is also authorized for use in livestock species including cattle, swine, sheep, goats, horses, donkeys, and mules.

These authorizations provide additional options for exotic animal managers and wildlife professionals to help prevent and respond to NWS as ongoing monitoring efforts continue.
