FDA Authorizes Topical Spray for Prevention and Treatment of New World Screwworm

On March 10, 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization for F10 Antiseptic Wound Spray with Insecticide, a topical product designed to prevent and treat New World screwworm infestations.

The spray contains benzalkonium chloride, polyhexanide, and cypermethrin and is approved for use in exotic wildlife hoofstock and mammals, including deer, sheep, goats, and other hoofstock, as well as cattle, horses, raptors and other wild birds, and pet birds. It is not approved for use in dogs or cats.

The FDA notes that available scientific data indicate the spray may be effective for preventing and treating screwworm, with potential benefits outweighing known risks. This marks the first FDA authorization for NWS prevention and treatment across multiple additional species, expanding options beyond those previously available for cattle, dogs, and cats.

EWA is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as new information becomes available. Members with questions are invited to contact the EWA headquarters office for assistance.
